Royals sign RHP Duckworth for 2009. Right-hander Brandon Duckworth signed a one-year contract with the Royals on Monday and was sent outright to Triple-A Omaha.

Duckworth spent most of last season with Omaha but went 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts for Kansas City. The Royals said he will attend the team’s major league camp this spring training.

The 32-year-old Duckworth will make a salary based on $600,000 while he’s on the Royals and $300,000 if he’s in the minors.

The move leaves the Royals with 38 players on the 40-man roster.

Padres promote Dave Winfield.

The San Diego Padres announced Monday that Dave Winfield has been promoted to executive vice president/senior advisor.

The team also promoted Paul DePodesta to vice president and Fred Uhlman Jr. to vice president/assistant to the general manager.

Winfield, who in 2001 became the first player to enter the Hall of Fame as a Padre, has been a member of the Padres board of directors for the last eight years. He assumed the role of vice president/senior advisor in May 2002.

DePodesta, 35, joined the Padres in July 2006 as special assistant for baseball operations.

Uhlman, 41, has been with the Padres as the assistant to the general manager in January 1996.
