CALGARY 4, EDMONTON 0
EDMONTON, Alberta David Moss continued his spectacular preseason by scoring twice as the Calgary Flames recorded a 4-0 triumph over their provincial rival, the Edmonton Oilers.
All-Star defenseman Dion Phaneuf and Eric Nystrom also tallied, blue-liner Cory Sarich added two assists and Curtis McElhinney stopped all 19 shots he faced for Calgary, which has won four of its five preseason contests.
Entering the game with two goals and three assists in three contests, Moss scored twice in the second period to put this one out of reach. Both of Moss tallies were set up by Sarich, who has one goal and three assists in four exhibition games.
Boyd also added to his strong preseason by assisting on Moss first tally, which came 2:16 into the second session to give the Flames a 2-0 advantage. Boyd has one goal and six assists in four contests.
That was more than enough offense for McElhinney, who stopped seven shots in both the first and third periods while denying five in the second.
Dwayne Roloson made 27 saves over two periods and Devan Dubnyk stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third for Edmonton, which has won only one of its five preseason games (1-2-2).
MONTREAL 2, DETROIT 1 (SO)
MONTREAL Robert Lang scored the decisive goal in the second round of the shootout to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
After both teams failed to capitalize on a slew of scoring opportunities in the third period and overtime, the game moved to the bonus format, and Lang came back to haunt his former team as the Canadiens improved to 5-2-0 this preseason.
Detroits Ville Leino and Montreals Max Pacioretty – who scored the games only goals in regulation – both converted their shootout attempts in the first round, but Marian Hossa misfired on a wrist shot, which easily was stopped by goaltender Carey Price.
That set the stage for Lang, who went to his left and knocked in a backhander to give the Canadiens the edge. Valtteri Filppulas attempt moments later went wide of the left goalpost, giving Montreal the victory.
Price, the Canadiens first-round pick in 2005 who started 40 games as a rookie last season, stopped 28 of 29 shots. His only blemish came early in the second period, less than two minutes after Paciorettys backhander had given Montreal a 1-0 lead at 4:42.
Justin Abdelkader found a wide-open Leino in front of the net, and the 24-year-old Finn buried a wrister to tie the game.
The Red Wings had a scare early in the third period, when veteran defenseman Chris Chelios hobbled off the ice with an apparent ankle injury.
At 2:09, Chelios blocked a shot by defenseman Francis Bouillon with his right foot and immediately grimaced in pain. The ankle was examined by trainers on the bench for a few minutes before the 46-year-old gingerly was escorted off the ice and back to the locker room.
MINNESOTA 3, CHICAGO 2 (OT)
ST. PAUL, Minnesota Stephane Veilleux scored his second goal of the game with 24 seconds remaining in overtime as the Minnesota Wild avenged a previous preseason loss to the Chicago Blackhawks with a 3-2 triumph.
Colton Gillies also tallied and Niklas Backstrom finished with 33 saves for Minnesota, which improved to 3-1-0 in the preseason.
Reigning Calder Trophy winner Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist and defenseman Brent Seabrook also scored for Chicago, which has won three of its five preseason contests – including a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on Friday.
In the waning moments of overtime, Mikko Koivu skated down the left wing on a 2-on-1 before sliding a pass to Veilleux, who beat goaltender Corey Crawford with a wrist shot for the game-winning goal.
The 16th overall pick in the 2007 draft, Gillies opened the scoring just 2:22 into the first period, collecting a carom off defenseman John Scotts shot and banking the puck off Crawfords leg and into the net.
Kane responded just over six minutes later as he accepted a feed from Patrick Sharp and wristed a shot past Backstrom to tie the contest at 1-1. The first overall pick in 2007, Kane led all rookies – as well as the Blackhawks – in scoring with 72 points (21 goals, 51 assists) last season.
After Seabrooks power-play goal midway through the second period gave Chicago the advantage, Veilleux squared the contest just 3 1/2 minutes into the third period, poking in a rebound after Crawford had denied defenseman Martin Skoulas shot from the high slot.
ANAHEIM 2, LOS ANGELES 1 (SO)
LOS ANGELES Chris Kunitz scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Anaheim Ducks skated to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Matt Moulson gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead with his third goal of the exhibition season at 10:57 of the first period, beating goaltender Jonas Hiller with a wrist shot. But defenseman Kent Huskins forged a tie midway through the second, tipping Corey Perrys shot past netminder Jason LaBarbera during a power play at 10:41.
Neither team was able to break through in the third period, a session in which the Ducks held a 12-5 advantage. Following a scoreless overtime, Moulson was denied by Hiller on the Kings first shootout attempt.
LaBarbera made a left pad save on Bobby Ryans wrist shot, and Teddy Purcells attempt to slip the puck between the pads of Hiller was denied. But Kunitz avoided a poke-check attempt by LaBarbera and fired the puck into the net on Anaheims second opportunity to give his team the edge.
Hiller – who finished with 22 saves – made it stand, stopping David Meckler on Los Angeles last chance.
Perry notched his seventh point in four preseason games with an assist and defenseman Ken Klee also set up Huskins goal in his debut with the Ducks, who acquired him from the Thrashers in last weeks trade that sent blue-liner Mathieu Schneider to Atlanta.
LaBarbera turned aside 30 shots and defenseman Drew Doughty – the second overall pick in last Junes draft – recorded his first point with an assist for Los Angeles, which obtained veteran blue-liner Sean ODonnell from Anaheim earlier in the day.
SAN JOSE 4, PHOENIX 3 (OT)
SAN JOSE, California Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists, including the game-winning tally in overtime to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 4-3 preseason victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.
Captain Patrick Marleau added a goal and a pair of assists for San Jose, which outshot Phoenix, 35-17, in winning its second game of the preseason.
San Jose emerged victorious at 3:03 of the extra session, when Thorntons shot from the left faceoff circle went off the crossbar and into the net.
The Coyotes drew first blood when Olli Jokinen carried the puck behind the net and backhanded it to Alex Bourret in the left circle. Bourret put a wrist shot past goaltender Evgeni Nabokov just 5:41 into the game.
After the officials called four penalties within a minute, Phoenix scored again during a 4-on-4 as Jokinen walked into the left circle and snapped a shot high over Nabokovs left shoulder for a 2-0 lead.
The Sharks halved the deficit at 2:39 of the second period, when Tomas Plihal received a pass from Jeremy Roenick from behind the goal line and stuffed the puck between netminder Al Montoyas pads. Just 95 seconds into the third, Marleau gathered the rebound of Devin Setoguchis shot and backhanded it over Montoya to forge a 2-2 tie.
Phoenix regained the lead at 10:24 of the third as Garth Murray slid a rebound past Nabokov. But San Jose knotted it at 3-3 on a wraparound goal by Setoguchi just 73 seconds later.
